Creating Company Logos For Construction Companies

The construction sector is growing more and more competitive. Larger firms handle the larger development projects while smaller and newer firms must display their quality with various subcontracts before moving on to major projects.

My design firm has just been handed out an assignment to create a new construction logo design for a local construction organization. To start things off, the art director and I visited our client’s office for a brief interview session to garner more information about the company.

Like many other companies we have questioned, most companies instinctively know they need a new outlook to remain competitive but are not exactly sure what they want. That is where we come into play.

Before starting on the logo design, we commonly inquire about the company history, its turnover, its goals, its specialty, its target market and exactly why it wants a new construction logo design; just to get a better perception of things.

We found out that they are a relatively young company, 11 years in the business with 4 big subcontract projects and many smaller ones under their belts, each one more costly than the last. They are now advancing to adopt a blue ocean strategy and venture into eco-friendly medium cost suburban development - a niche with very few competitors - and consequently seizing the opportunity to make a name for themselves as one of the first companies to service this niche.

From the dialogue, we found out that they have the needed resources to carry out medium scale development projects. Their identified niche has made it much easier to distinguish them from other developers.

At our studio, we had our normal brainstorming session and charted our art direction. After that we assigned 4 designers to produce individual interpretations or logo samples to turn those creative concepts to logos.

After a number of days, the logo concepts were ready for viewing. Some designs made use of stylized text while others made use of construction related graphics like levelers and trowels to get the point across. Even though all 4 construction logo design samples were unique in their own way, they all kept to to two primary points.

Professionalism
Developers deal with major projects. To qualify for such projects, they must always be perceived as a professional and responsible entity with ideal business ethics. Thus, the clean and clear designs reflected that appropriately.

Eco-Friendliness
This is the niche this company is determined to penetrate. Naturally, the designs, either by color or graphics, reiterate the company’s dedication to the preservation of the environment.

Finally it is up to our clients to make a decision on the designs. However they could make minor changes but as professional designers, we must make certain the design ultimately keeps to the key points noted earlier.
